Giampiero Batani
Giampiero earned his Bachelor Degree in Agro-Industrial Biotechnology in 2010 and Master Degree in Ecobiology in 2013 at the University of Rome La Sapienza (Italy).
He then earned a Ph.D. degree in Microbiology and Immunology in 2019 at the University of New South Wales, Sydney (Australia). His Ph.D. thesis was carried out in the laboratory led by Prof. Torsten Thomas at the University of New South Wales and in Prof. Ute Hentschel Humeida’s group at GEOMAR, Helmholtz centre for Ocean Research, Kiel (Germany). After obtaining his Ph.D., Giampiero worked as Post-Doctoral fellow in Dr. Eva Nováková’s group at the University of South Bohemia, Ceske Budejovice (Czech Republic).
During his Ph.D. and Post-Doctoral periods, Giampiero expanded and strengthened his scientific knowledge on the host-microbiome interactions, using a combination of culture-dependent and -independent approaches, which include standard cultivation techniques, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, immunological methods, flow cytometry and image analyses. In particular, he gained extensive experience in bacterial culture, single cell sorting and confocal microscopy to disentangle the complex host-symbiont interactions at the interface of pathogens cause of humane diseases.
Giampiero is currently a Post-Doctoral researcher in the group led by Dr. Rino Rappuoli at Fondazione Toscana Life Sciences in Siena. Here, thanks to his experience in microbiology and immunology, he works on the isolation of human monoclonal antibodies against antimicrobial-resistant pathogens within the project ShiMabs.
